  1. FROSTBITE --
  2. Frostbite is damage resulting from freezing body tis-
  3. sue. Hands, feet, face, & ears are most suscepitble.
  4. Wind chill on exposed flesh speeds freezing, as does
  5. direct contact of flesh with cold metals, etc. Dress
  6. adequately, especially if wind is blowing.  At low
  7. temperatures, with or without wind, check each other's
  8. faces & ears frequently for white patches which indi-
  9. cate freezing flesh. Check yourself to be sure you can
  10. feel sensation in every part of your body. First aid
  11. treatment for frostbite is complicated and must be done
  12. correctly to prevent permanent damage. Extremely light
  13. frostbite--called frost nip--should be treated immed-
  14. iately: Cover a white patch on the face with warm hand
  15. to return flesh to a rosy glow. Hold frost-nipped fin-
  16. gers or toes (without boots) in warm armpit. NEVER rub
  17. a frostbitten area with anything, especially snow!
  18. Treat victim for hypothermia. Transport to medical help
  19. for rewarming as soon as possible. Do not use rewarmed,
  20. frostbitten part of the body. Walking on frozen feet is
  21. less damaging than walking on rewarmed feet.
